Bucs Lose Heart Breaker To Raiders In Overtime

Bucs Fall To 0-3 At Home This Season As The Raiders Win In Overtime 30-24

A heartbreaking loss for the Buccaneers today was a record setting day for the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders set a franchise record for most passing yards in a game, as Derek Carr was lights out going 40-59 for 513 yards and four touchdowns. That was the good record. The bad being the Raiders breaking the all-time record for penalties in a game with 23 of them for 200 yards. A record previously held by the 49ers with 22 on October 4th 1998.

The Buccaneers did the offense no favors in this contest, giving up a total of 626 net yards. Derek Carr, Amari Cooper, and Michael Crabtree had their way with the Buccaneers defense all day. Cooper and Crabtree had 20 catches for 181 yards and a touchdown between the two of them. The Raiders also had three players break the 30 yards mark on the ground, Latavius Murray (48), Jalen Richard (34), and DeAndre Washington (32). The Raiders had a total of 128 yards on the ground, about 13 yards more than their average per game.

The Buccaneers more than had their chances to win the game, however. The Bucs to the lead in this one with 3:48 left on the clock, but the defense couldn’t stop the potent Raiders offense, as Derek Carr rallied the troops and drove them downfield scoring a touchdown on a 75 yards drive that took the Raiders all of two minutes and ten seconds. The Bucs got the ball, but quickly went three and out, giving the ball right back to the Raiders. The Raiders would once again put together a drive, but Sebastian Janikowski would miss the 50 yard attempt with triple zeros on the game clock, sending the game to overtime.

The Raiders would get the ball to start overtime, but once again Janikowski missed  a long field goal, this one from 52 yards out. With seemingly a third chance to win the game and capitalize on the Raiders misfortunes, the Buccaneers took over with great field position, but their offense was completely flat in overtime. They had the ball twice in OT and failed to even pick up a first down.

With the Raiders third possession in overtime and under two minutes left on the clock, the Raiders went for it on 4th down. This was a prime opportunity for the Bucs to once again capitalize and have a chance to win the game. Instead, with keeping up with the theme of the game, missed tackles allowed Seth Roberts to break free and score a 41 yard touchdown on 4th and 4. It was the icing on a bad defense cake.

Jameis Winston played a mistake-free game as far as turnovers are concerned, but wasn’t all that efficient at the same time. He completed just 50% of his passes for 180 yards, and had two touchdowns, including one that should have tied the game in the fourth quarter, had Roberto Aguayo not missed the extra point.

Let’s be real. The only reason the Bucs were in the game was because the Raiders racked up an eye-popping 200 penalty yards.  To give up over 600 total yards, and let Derek Carr set the record for most passing yards in Raiders franchise history is usually a recipe for a blowout. After an on week for the Bucs defense, this week they went right back to being off.

The Buccaneers continued their woes at Raymond James, falling to 0-3 at home. The Bucs will try to quickly forget about the loss as the meet up with the NFC South leading Atlanta Falcons on a short week. The game will be Thursday night at 8:25 PM from Raymond James Stadium.
