Two prospects heading in different directions as the injury bug continues to bite pitching staff.
On Monday the Rays got some good news as RHP Yonny Chirinos was reinstated from the 10-day DL. The 24-year old rookie was sent to AAA Durham and will likely be back up sooner than later this season. Chirinos suffered from a right forearm strain and was sent to the DL on May 1st. In six games with the Rays this season (five starts) he’s gone 0-1 with a 3.71 ERA in 26.2 innings.
The flip side to the coin today was not so good.

LHP Anthony Banda, acquired from the Diamondbacks in the Steven Souza Jr. trade this spring, is heading for Tommy John Surgery. Banda, 24, joins Jose De Leon and Brent Honeywell as the growing list of Rays pitchers heading for the debilitating surgery. It’s likely he will not be ready to pitch again until 2020.
In three games with the Rays this season (one start), Banda has impressed. He’s pitched to a 1-0 record with a 3.68 ERA in 14.2 innings. His most impressive outing likely came in his one start at Tropicana Field against Baltimore back on May 26th. He went 6.1 innings giving up just one run on three hits with seven strikeouts.
