ST. PETERSBURG — Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
That is the question that Rays outfielder Carlos Gomez ponders while he strolled up to the batter’s box at Tropicana Field. The affable veteran has been using the theme song to SpongeBob SquarePants as his walk-up music during Tampa Bay’s current homestand.

His future track selections will include the theme songs to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Dora the Explorer. That’s what happens when you let your three children pick your playlist while they are in town.
“I know all the kids in the stands are going to like it,” Gomez said.
Gomez was not in the starting lineup a day after his violent collision with first baseman Jake Bauers. Although Gomez arrived to the stadium on Sunday with a few new scrapes and bruises, he said that the day off was not due to injury. Despite hitting just .186 with seven home runs so far this season, Gomez has played stellar defense in right field. His positive attitude has also been somewhat infectious in the clubhouse, especially as the team weathered a recent eight-game losing streak.
“I think you have to have that good attitude when you play,” Gomez said. “This game is more failure than success so you have to have fun and do those things like play defense and run the bases and be a good teammate.”

So will cartoon theme songs become a trend with the Rays’ hitters?
Outfielder Kevin Keirmaier said he would go with the theme from Heathcliff, a cartoon from the early 80s that chronicles the adventures of a sarcastic cat who lives in a junkyard.
“You gotta respect the classics,” he said.
