Good luck finding a harder hitting safety. Don’t believe me? Check out the video above of his hit against Chiefs running back Christian Okoye. Okoye was no small man either weighing in at 253 pounds. Steve Atwater routinely punished opposing ball carriers for the Broncos for ten seasons, before finishing up his career with the New York Jets.
Steve was a member of eight Pro Bowls and three All-Pro teams, as well as a member of the NFL’s All-Decade team for the 1990’s. A member of the Broncos Ring of Honor, Atwater was the defensive anchor for the Broncos, who won Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII with him patrolling the defensive backfield.
Atwater has been discussed as a Hall of Fame candidate, even being a finalist last year, but has yet to get his invitation to Canton. For now, he settles for the best player to wear the number 27.
