Drafted by the Lions in the NFL draft and the Raiders in the AFL draft, Fred Biletnikoff wound up signing with the Raiders where he spent his entire 14 year professional career. Another wide receiver miss for the Lions in the history books….
In an era where wide receivers had a tougher times due to different rules, Biletnikoff had an impressive 76 touchdown catches and averaged 15.2 yards per reception. Fred won Super Bowl XI with the Oakland Raiders and was named MVP of the game. It was his second Super Bowl appearance, as he was also a member of the team in the Super Bowl II loss.
“You look back on your career and realize that you went through your life a lot quicker than a lot of people. You have a lot of failure and success in a matter of minutes on the football field.”- Fred Biletnikoff via profootballhof.com
He was voted into the Hall of Fame in 1988. From 1989-2007, Biletnikoff stayed in the league as the long time wide receivers coach for the Raiders. Biletnikoff has an award named after him in college football, the Fred Biletnikoff Award, which is given annually to the best wide receiver in college football.
