Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman announced Sunday that the team had cut 24 players, reducing the current 2016 training camp roster to 28 players. This is the second major roster reduction, following 22 cuts that took place last Wednesday. Most players cut in this round have been assigned to the Lightning’s top minor league affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League.
It also brings an end to veteran defenseman James Wisniewski’s tryout with the team. Wisniewski, who missed all of last season for the Carolina Hurricanes after suffering a torn ACL, was invited to camp with the hope that his right-handed shot would upgrade the power play. He played in three of the team’s four preseason games but struggled to adapt to coach Jon Cooper’s style of defensemen joining offensive rushes.
