Week in Pro Wrestling 11/18/19 brand invasions

This week in Pro Wrestling, brand invasions are rampant. NXT fights Raw and SmackDown! AEW provides an fantastic underdog push and the final two who will fight for the AEW diamond ring! SmackDown and Raw invades NXT! This is all leading to NXT Wargames and Survivor Series!

RAW:

The TD Garden in Boston, MA was home to this week’s edition of Monday Night Raw, the go-home show heading into Survivor Series on 11/18/19.

The Man Wants A Fight

Becky Lynch, the Raw Women’s Champion, has words for Shayna Baszler and Bayley, the champions of the other respective brands. She wants a fight, but this instead leads to hr and Charlotte in a tag team match against the Iiconics.

Charlotte Flair gets the win, submitting Billie Kay with the Figure Eight as Lynch tapped out Royce with the Disarmher. Samoa Joe was doing commentary during the match as he recovers from a recent injury.

As the faces celebrated, they were attacked from behind by Baszler and her Horsewomen cohorts, Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke. Security breaks it up.

Hawkins and Ryder are ready for tag team action, having a title shot later against the Viking Raiders, but the returning AoP have other plans as the former champs are laid out. AoP we’d later find out, will be in action next week.

Humberto Carrillo continues to amass wins in recent weeks, this time coming away with one after pinning a member of the OC in Karl Anderson. The OC tried to interfere in the match, but Humberto struck with a rollup as the Street Profits evened the odds later on.

Lana and Bobby Lashley cut a promo against Rusev after Seth Rollins was backstage, hyping his match with Andrade later on. Lana says she’s filing for divorce from the Bulgarian Brute, who isn’t there tonight.

“Bob” Lashley then proceeds to embarass No Way Jose, submitting him with a full nelson, which actually led to a TKO victory. This was a dominant win for Lashley as he continues his story with Rusev.

Unlikely Foils

Seth Rollins and Andrade were entertaining the fans with a quality match, when the Lucha House Party, of all people, interrupt the bout, attacking Rollins and causing the DQ. They were wearing Smackdown shirts as the Survivor Series story continues. After Rollins fought them off, he and Andrade stood together in the ring, on the same page for the moment against the opposition.

Buddy Murphy will seemingly be the next challenger for Aleister Black, knocking on his door backstage. Murphy left and Black appeared, seeing nobody there. Buddy Murphy would then go on to defeat Akira Tozawa in singles action with the Murphy’s Law and he is getting a lot of quality tv time lately.

24/7 hi-jinx nearly interrupted an Erick Rowan match as he defeats the local talent with an iron claw chokeslam after hitting a crossbody on the Singhs and the talent.

Randy Orton says he has a partner of convenience for the now seemingly open title match against the Viking Raiders later.

An offer he can’t refuse

Kevin Owens and Drew McIntyre are tearing the house down in a match that many fans surely would dub must see. Triple H interrupts the match as his music plays and the action comes to a halt. He tells Owens that even though he has a soft spot for Seth Rollins, Owens is a different breed. He wants Owens on team NXT at Survivor Series as he talks about their rich history and how it was Hunter who helped Owens secure his first Universal Title. Owens doesn’t respond and before he can, Raw superstars spill out of the locker room to brawl with NXT stars atop the ramp.

Owens is attacked from behind by the Undisputed Era and they are chased off by the OC before we know what the answer is. We then find out that Humberto Carrillo will get a title shot next week against AJ Styles. Will this be his final opportunity at the gold?

Paul Heyman and Rey Mysterio really set the table for the forthcoming Universal Title match with quality promos and stories about their history together. That match could be very good if given time to develop.

Asuka defeats Natalya quite soundly after a rollup in a rather quick match. Kairi Sane provided an ample distraction and it allowed the champs to pick up another win at the hands of an established talent.

Allies Of Convenience

Randy Orton and Ricochet fill in the gap left by the AoP assault on Hawkins and Ryder as they challenge the Viking Raiders for the tag titles. The match is short lived however as Smackdown and NXT talents once again collide in the ring, causing the main event to end in a no contest.

AJ Styles, Seth Rolins and a multitude of others are left lying in the middle of the ring as Triple H invites everyone to appear at NXT Wednesday and to bring their A-game. The show ended by progressing stories, moving towards Survivor Series, but for all the development, he in-ring product suffered this week. It should and smartly should, get back on track next week after the PPV.-Joel M.

AEW Dynamite:

On AEW’s Dynamite, A announcement from the Le Champion. A insane match from Darby Allin and Jon Moxley. Nick Jackson and Fenix in singles action. A dozen AEW stars fight for the right to hold the AEW diamond ring. Dino’s run rampant and great tag team action! This is Dynamite!

Rare singles match. New contender for the AEW’s Women’s Title? Dynamite Dozen Battle!

Fenix vs Nick Jackson. Fenix wins via Fenix Driver pin fall.

Nick is without his brother Matt due to injuries from Santana and Ortiz. So he went to take on Fenix from the Lucha Bros one on one. This is a very rare singles match from Nick, he hasn’t had one since 2015. This was a sight to behold, the crowd was insanely hot for the match. I couldn’t take notes on the match because it was probably the fastest paced match in AEW yet. Near the end, Nick spiked Fenix with a Canadian Destroyer to Sharpshooter. However, Fenix powered out and landed a Fenix Driver. Super hot opening for Dynamite.

Hikaru Shida vs Britt Baker. Hikaru wins via Knee Strike pin fall.

These ladies had the unenviable task of following the blazing match beforehand. It was a solid match, may be even Britt Baker’s best match in AEW. Baker went for the Lockjaw immediately, but Hikura fought out and we go to break.

Back to the match, Shida is complete control with vicious strikes. Including a jumpimg knee strike off a steel chair. While the other commentators were confused about a weapon use. Excalibur explained that she didn’t use a weapon, the chair was merely a launching pad for a move. Nice touch AEW, it’s the small things that I love. At the end, Baker cinches in the Lockjaw but fought out. Shida hits the Falcon Arrow for a two count and then a Running Knee Strike for the win.

Making her the newest number one contender for Riho’s title. What kind of irks me is that the Women’s division do not seem to have a clear cut Face/Heel roster. Shida was sort of booked as a face but did heelish tactics. Same is confusing with other ladies, aside from Baker and Riho. Hopefully AEW can fix this soon.

Dynamite Dozen Battle Royal.

A battle royal to determine who will face off for the AEW Diamond Ring. Kind of like what Cody used in Ring of Honor Wrestling as the title. However, we can only speculate how AWE is going to use it. Your contenders are MJF, Kip Sabian, Jungle Boy, Adam Page, Chuck Taylor, Joey Janela, Trent, Sonny Kiss, Pentagon Jr, Jimmy Havoc, Orange Cassidy, and Bad Ass Billy Gunn!!

Huge pop for Billy Gunn! The crowd ate up every second of TV time Mr Ass had. This was actually a more stable battle royal compared to the other AEW ones. I think it benefited from having less wrestlers duking it out.

A bunch a fun spots in the fight, Havoc stapling everyone with a staple gun. Christopher Daniels wearing Fenix’s mask for distraction. Orange Cassidy destroys (meaning a bunch of soft strikes) Billy Gunn! At the end it was Page and Jungle Boy standing tall, however MJF was in hiding and then pulled out Jungle Boy out. Leaving Hangman Page vs MJF to fight for the AEW Diamond Ring.

Le Champion apologizes. Dino squash. Party of the Powerful.

Jericho apologizes, kinda.

Le Champion makes his way to apologize for losing his temper last week. However, Jericho can not bring himself to say “I’m sorry”. The Pain Maker lets Jake Hager say it for him. This was a great use of Hager, as the man of few words but the muscle of The Inner Circle. Shortly Scorpio Sky arrives and reminds Jericho that he gave him his first loss in AEW. SCU then baits Jericho into making a match for the AEW title next week. It was great bait maneuver, as SCU played of Jericho’s ego.

A brawl between SCU and The Inner Circle is at hand. With Inner Circle taking advantage of the numbers game. Until everybody’s favorite Lucha dinosaur arrives, Luchasaurus and Jurassic Express arrives. Leaving The Inner Circle to pack it up, with their tails between their legs. Love me some wrestling dinosaurs.

Luchasaurus vs Peter Avalon, The Librarian.

In a total squash match that lasted 45 seconds. The beloved wrestling dinosaur destroys the Librarian. A feint kick to Super Kick to Face Plant.. game over. Yeah, it’s a squash match. However, it’s one between a Lucha wrestling dinosaur and a librarian. Pro wrestling, don’t ever change.. I love you.

Private Party vs Proud and Powerful. Private Party wins via Gin N Juice pin fall.

A peculiar match, with both teams having a solid match. There is somethings I rarely say about Santana and Ortiz, like boring. However, this match just dragged a tad bit long with them in control. The match picked up later with Quen hot tags in Kassidy and they string in some offense. Party hits the Silly String but to no avail, when Santana tries to land the loaded sock, NIck Jackson runs down to distract. Allowing Private Party to hit the Gin N Juice.

Shortly after the match The Spanish God, Sammy Guevara pounces on Nick. Which led to the return of Dustin Rhodes! Huge pop from the crowd for this, as they witness Dustin blast Sammy with his arm cast ala Lex Luger style. Man I love pro wrestling.

The Main Event.

Jon Moxley vs Darby Allin. Moxley wins via Avalanche Paradigm Shift Pin fall.

Let me start off with this, Darby Allin WILL be a superstar soon. The avid skateboarder turned pro wrestler is on of the most organic faces in recent years. AEW has done a great job on booking this lad. Darby already faced off against Chris Jericho in a fantastic match, and faces off against Moxley.

Darby arrived in a body bag with MOX on it, then made his way out of it and skateboarded down the ramp. I swear Allin is living every wrestling fan’s childhood dream. Moxely makes his way to through the crowd and Aliin hits a hard Suicide Dive. Both men take the fighting into the crowd and Moxley drops Allin at ringside.

When the two are in the ring, the match officially starts. This match had a intense start, an good middle, an again intense ending. Allin getting pummeled by Moxely, but fighting back. Jon becomes more and more angry that Darby will not fall, even to a point of stuffing Allin in the body bag and stomp away at Allin.

The ending sequence was crazy as well, Jon goes for the Paradigm Shift but Allin flips out for a roll up and two count. Darby then quickly hits the Code Red for another two count. Darby  smelling blood, goes up the turnbuckle for the Coffin Drop. However Moxley, on his back catches him in a Rear Necked Choke Hold, ABSURD! Darby then rolls it over for a pin fall attempt and making Jon let go. The duo then fight on top of the turnbuckle and Moxley lands an Avalanche Paradigm Shift! Jon picks up the 1-2-3. INSANE!!

Closing thoughts.

Again another strong show and AEW did without Kenny Omega, Cody Rhodes, and Matt Jackson. The ladies division still is trying to find their footing with character development and some can be said for the men. However, a red hot opener, some good middle stuff, and that fire main event keeps me coming back for more.-David G

NXT

The Man Comes to Town

The kicked off with the arrival of Becky Lynch. This was her first appearance at Full Sail since moving on from NXT approximately 4 years ago. Lynch started by talking smack on her Smackdown rival Bayley before calling out NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler.

Instead of Baszler, it was former UK Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley who answered the call. They proceeded to have a quick sprint of a match that teased potential greatness between the pair should they eventually be on the same brand with a proper feud. This match, however, was cut short when Baszler arrived with her friends Duke and Shafir. Lynch and Ripley overcame the odds to end the segment standing tall in the ring… for now.

Brooooo….

Kona Reeves was on his way to the ring for a match with Matt Riddle when Ricochet arrived and changed plans (for the better). Ricochet and Riddle had an exciting bout that also saw interference to influence the ending. Smackdown stars Cesaro and Nakamura kicked off a chain of dominos when they attacked both Ricochet and Riddle. Roderick Strong arrived to mix it up with Nakamura, one of the two men he’ll face at Survivor Series. Finn Balor hit the scene to go after his TakeOver opponent Riddle, and by the end of the segment it was Riddle alone standing tall in the center of the ring.

Tag Team Clinic

The Revival were originally scheduled to be part of the tag team 3 way at Survivor Series until they dropped the Smackdown belts to New Day. This match, one of the few announced ahead of this week’s show, gave us a small glimpse of what could have been. The former NXT Tag Champions faced off with the current champions Undisputed Era (Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly). Regardless of the inconsistent booking received of Dash and Dawson since leaving Full Sail, these for men comprise two of the BEST tag teams currently working in professional wrestling. They delivered on that greatness here in one of the few matches not determined by outside interference this week. UE picked up a quality win ahead of their match Sunday with New Day and Viking Raiders (more on them later).

InSanity Reigns

UK Women’s Champion Kay Lee Ray came to the ring for a match with Dakota Kai. It’s odd to me that no explanation has been provided for Ray’s inclusion on Team Baszler at Wargames. Had Ripley chosen a member of the UK roster for her squad it would have made sense given her established relationships on that roster. Ray, though a strong competitor and champion, just feels like a random inclusion on Shayna’s team. This could have been addressed with a quick promo prior to this match.

Regardless, the plucky Dakota Kai put up quite a fight here. It wasn’t quite on the level of her match with Baszler a few weeks ago, but it was another quality showing in her ongoing story of not quite getting the big wins. Ray spent a good amount of time targeting Kai’s surgically repaired knee en route to a Gory Bomb for the win.

A post-match melee saw members of all three rosters doing battle throughout the arena. They even teased what could be some fun encounters this weekend. Ultimately it was Nikki Cross standing tall as queen of the ring after assaulting nearly everyone with what appeared to be a trash can lid.

Returning Raiders

Raw Tag Champions the Viking Raiders returned to their former home for a match against the Forgotten Sons. It nearly ended early in squash fashion for the Raiders, but the Sons used their numbers and outside interference from Jaxon Ryker to last longer than they probably should have. Ryker was eventually ejected by the ref, and the Raw Champions prevailed.

Advantage Match

The main event saw Adam Cole and Dominik Dijakovic facing off in a ladder match for the Wargames advantage. Though not quite as exciting as last week’s ladder match for the Women’s advantage, this bout did still have its moments. At one point Dijakovic chokeslammed Cole from one ladder onto another. Cole later returned the favor by hitting a Panama Sunrise from the ladder.

The ending saw both made atop the main ladder wrestling for control of the briefcase. A horizontal ladder had previously been set up to connect this ladder to the ring corner. Cole hit Dijakovic in the face with the briefcase causing him to fall back onto that horizontal ladder. This gave Cole the time he needed to unlatch the briefcase and stand victorious.

Closing Chaos

The show closed with yet another brawl between members of all three rosters. After Keith Lee and Ivar delivered a dual dive over the top rope that left everyone lying in heaps at ringside, it was Seth Rollins left in the ring alone. He wasn’t alone for long as he was soon joined by Ciampa for the final encounter seemingly indicating that Ciampa will be the captain of Team NXT on Sunday.

Speaking of Sunday, zero members of either NXT Survivor Series team were officially announced. With all of the title holders of Undisputed Era booked in their own matches, it seems likely Ciampa will be leading a team comprised primarily of his Wargames partners. The Women’s team is less obvious, but with Baszler fighting Lynch and Bayley it will likely be Rhea Ripley captaining the team.

Saturday’s Wargames surprise will be the 4th member of Team Ciampa. It was previously assumed that it was injury status making this a mystery. However, new reports suggest there was always intended to be a surprise reveal in this spot. Could an injured star be closer to retain than we’ve been led to believe? Could a member of the raw or Smackdown rosters shift allegiance? Or is it a huge debut by a returning star from WWE’s past? I’m looking forward to finding out the answer Saturday night!-Jason M

NXT UK

Finest Failure

The show kicked off this week with a match between Trent Seven and Kona Reeves. This was Reeves first appearance in the UK, but he was just as dead on arrival here as he is in the US. He cut a prematch promo body shaming Seven, but the crowd was booing and shouting him down the entire time. This wasn’t the good kind of heat either. It was go away heat.

In the ring, Reeves got a bit too much offense for my liking, but I get that they are still trying to salvage some sort of career for the man. Seven eventually won with an impressive Burning Hammer. On his celebratory stroll around the ringside area Seven came face to face to Eddie Dennis. Newly returned from injury, it would seem he has his sights on the man from Mustache Mountain for his 1st opponent.

Future Uncertain

In previous appearances interactions with the likes of Kassius Ohno and Tyler Bate were intended to make A-Kid seem like something special. The audience doesn’t seem to have gotten the memo though as they were mostly pretty quiet during his match with Jack Starz this week. It didn’t help that Starz, who has been used exclusively as a jobber thus far, was booked far too dominantly in the match.

A-Kid scored the victory with a submission that seemed to happen out of nowhere. This popped the crowd a little bit, but hopefully his next battle will do a little more. Later in the show Jordan Devlin showed a highlight reel of his own accomplishments and seemingly called out the Kid for a match next week.

Unimpressive Debut

For a few weeks now teaser videos have been shown for former rugby player Ridge Holland. Based on those vignettes, he had a look and a presence that I thought was promising. Unfortunately his debut match against Oliver Carter was not so impressive.

Holland has a great physique, but moves like a guy who puts more focus on mass than he does movement. He came across awkwardly stiff, like an old school bodybuilder type. There’s no way that’s going to get over in today’s wrestling where guys even larger than him are able to move like cruiserweights.

Holland did pick up the win since it was his debut match, and after it was over Carter’s tag partner Ashton Smith was out to check on his friend. Later the pair was shown walking down a hallway when Noam Dar showed up to be his usual rude self. The encounter set up a match for next week between Smith and Dar.

Tenacious Dragon

The main event of the night was the next chapter in the ongoing story between Ijla Dragunov and Alexander Wolfe. An interview shown earlier in the show added a new layer to the relationship. Dragunov talked of how he had trained with Wolfe, and that Wolfe had been quite controlling. The young Russian is no longer interested in being controlled, and that’s why he turned down the offer to join Imperium.

I must say that when Dragunov first debuted as some sort of pint sized Ivan Drago I was not immediately on board. Since then he has evolved a bit into something else. Now he’s the talented young rookie tenaciously standing up to snobby veterans, and it’s working for me. Plus his impressive feats of strength during matches have led me to view him as Tyler Bate with a slightly darker edge. I’m fully invested now and eager to see how he continues to grow.

The combination of the talent involved and the ongoing story that they masterfully worked into the action easily made this the match of the night. They even included moments of a frustrated Wolfe being tempted to use weapons only to eventually stay true to the Imperium motto that “the mat is sacred.” Ilja’s tenacity was on full display and he very nearly won until the other members of Imperium got involved. They caused enough of a distraction for Wolfe to pick up the victory. Post match Gallus hit the ring to save Dragunov from a further beating, and the battle of the two factions continues.– Jason M

Friday Night SmackDown:

The final go home show for the Survivor Series had more brand confrontations. All three brands lay claim to be the best. What we got was for the most part fire! SS Women’s Captains duke it out! Undisputed Era takes on New Day and Heavy Machinery. A new look for a title! Most of DX returns.. with the DX tank! Let’s get started on what went down!

Banging start of the show! Eight-Man tag team match. Two people who hate each other.

Rhea Ripley vs Charlotte Flair vs Sasha Banks. Rhea Ripley wins via Half Crucifix Pin Fall.

After a backstage rah-rah speech from Roman Reigns, Sasha Banks let’s the locker room that the SmackDown ladies are ready for a fight and leads them to the ring. Sasha calls out Raw’s team and they show up. Charlotte issues a challenge to Banks “For old time’s sake”, but Team NXT arrives with their newest member.. TONI STORM! Rhea then proposes a Three-way Captain match and it ensues.

This match was banging of a start to the show, all three ladies shined in it. From Flair’s Moonsault to the outside to Banks Meteora to Rhea Ripley’s smarts and power. The ladies pretty much stole the night. After a long battle, in which Charlotte got bloodied up from either a broken nose and/or busted lip.

It’s the ending sequence made me raise a Rock like eyebrow. Sasha goes for the Bank Statement on Flair, but is countered by a Figure Eight. Just when Sasha maybe going to tap, Rhea flies in under the bridged submission. Ripley creativity catches Flair off guard, as she applies a Half Crucifix pin, while Flair locked in the Figure Eight. 1-2-3.. it’s done. Fire.

New title look.

Before the match, Sami Zayn and his BBF Shinsuke Nakamura are in ring. The Critics of Critics makes claim that he is a stud and Shin is a bigger stud. Sami then gifts Nak a new Intercontinental Championship. I’m going to miss you white leather straps, but the new belt is kind of intriguing. It’s going to take time for me to accept it. Not ugly, just maybe a little to gaudy.

Undisputed Era vs New Day/Heavy Machinery. Undisputed Era wins via High Knee Strike pin fall.

After all that, Undisputed Era make their way in the ring, so does New Day and Kofi wants a fight after the attack last week. Strong asks “You want a match, the two of you against us four?”. By universal pro wrestling bylaws, this is a question to be answered by adding more people. In this case Heavy Machinery.

The match was really good, but the effort of Kofi being the sacrificial lamb seemed to be a mute point. Kofi took most of the beatings, with a hot tag to Otis. The charismatic part of Heavy Machinery ran over the Era like an albino rhino. However it was not enough as the Messiah Of The Backbreaker lands a High Knee Strike for the pin fall. Fun match, I can’t wait to see what they can do in a PPV environment.

Miz vs Daniel Bryan. No Contest due to The Fiend.

Either you will love this or be meh about it. Bryan calls out Bray Wyatt, but Miz arrives. The Miz cites that Daniel disrespected him on Miz TV. Quick recap, this stems from what looked at the time a shoot on the now defunct Talking Smack WWE Network show. After the rant The Miz slaps the taste out of Bryan’s mouth and the two have a match.

The two have strong chemistry when in the ring and this what is a throw away match shows it. The duo display on how to get to your best moves without it feeling rushed. After Daniel gets his Yes Kicks in and plans for a Running Knee Strike, The Fiend arrives. Miz is now nowhere to be seen after the light return from being cut off. Only The Fiend, Bray Wyatt then applies the Mandible Claw on Bryan ending the match. Eh.. it was ok, but could’ve been better.

Bayley strikes back. The main event leads to a brand brawl.

Shayna Bazler calls out Bayley.

The NXT Women’s champion calls out Bayley. The Submission Magician states that she will not attack from behind and for Bayley to come out here. The now villainous Hugger, attacks Shayna from behind. Only for it not to go as planned. The NXT bruiser fights back, only to have Bayley to go in to survival mode.

Bayley desperately tosses Bazler into the barricades and into the ring post, before retreating. Bazler gives her in which I now dub “The former MMA fighter turned Pro Wrestler Death Stare”, made famous by Ronda Rousey. This did what it needed to do. However, it made Bayley look like a shiesty heel. Bayley shouldn’t be one, she should be a bad ass heel that lacks remorse. Alas, we get this.

King Corbin/Bobby Roode/Dolph Ziggler vs Roman Reigns/Mustafa Ali/Shorty G. King Corbin wins via Deep Six pin fall.

The main event… yawn. This was just a hype machine that crumbled from a blown axis. This would’ve great if we didn’t see it three times a week. Each WWE show ended with a “brawl of brands”. There is times when less is more, but WWE wants to shove it down our gullets.

A sub par match ended with King Corbin hitting the Deep Six on Ali. Corbin then wants more and decides to attack Ali with his scepter. The Big Dog Roman makes the save with a Spear. Right at that moment Seth Rollins music hits. This lead to brawl between former Shield Brothers.

DX Tank returns, sorta.

Team Raw and SmackDown battle it out, only to have this happen. HHH/Shawn Micheals/Road Dogg lead a DX/NXT tank to the ring. Like Micheal Cole said “This isn’t 1998!”, however the young me in myself squealed like a little fan boy watching it. This felt like an apology for the horrible WCW Invasion in the past.

The brawl was your standard go home brawl. What really make me give a Stone Cold “What?”. Was the stare down between Braun Strowman and Keith Lee.. YES PLEASE!!! While I am at it, please throw in Big E for a three way feud!

 Afterthoughts.

The beginning was straight fire! However as the night went on, it seemed to implode.  It was subtle until the main event, then it was glaring. With the ladies stealing the show and WWE having to rely on nostalgia (yes, it got to me) shows that WWE is still relying on the past. With so many future stars in the company, why resort to such a tactic? I get nostalgia brings in easy bucks, but a newer angle is welcomed as well.

Hopefully this weekend can quell my concerns. NXT Wargames usually provides HOLY $*!T moments. Add that with the inclusion of NXT in Survivor Series, makes for an chant filled WWE PPV weekend. If WWE does it right.-David G.
