Rays DFA Hechavarria to make room for Pham

Though the trade deadline is over, the moves inside Tropicana Field were not.

Just after 3 PM today, the Rays designated SS Adeiny Hechavarria for assignment to make room for newly acquired OF Tommy Pham. The Rays had shopped their slick-fielding shortstop during the trade period but failed to land a deal. With Pham arriving from St. Louis today, a move needed to be made. OF Carlos Gomez was the only other real option. With the plethora of infielders on the MLB and AAA roster, “Hech” wound up being the odd man out.

Hechavarria came to the Rays on June 26, 2017 from the Miami Marlins. In 138 games he hit 10 HR, 50 RBI, and .257/.289/.376 to go along with some memorable, highlight-reel plays in the field.

He was unavailable for comment following the decision.
