NFL’s Best Players To Wear Each Number: Part 2 #’s 10-19

#14: Dan Fouts, Quarterback:

Another great quarterback who retired without hardware, Fouts was the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for 4,000 yards in three consecutive seasons, and the best to wear #14.  Fouts was known as one of the toughest quarterbacks to ever play, as his knack for going deep left him open to some vicious hits. Hall of Fame coach Bill Walsh said of Fouts, “Dan Fouts had a cool, steel-like nerve and courage … He took a lot of beatings, a lot of pounding, but continued to play, hurt or otherwise. He played more physical football than anybody on his team, including the linebackers”

“Hey man, I got it made. I’ve got no worries, no problems. All I have to do is go out every day and play football. How could anyone complain about that?”- Dan Fouts via profootballhof.com

Fouts retired after playing his entire career with the San Diego Chargers with 43,040 passing yards and 254 touchdowns in 15 seasons. He led the NFL in passing four times and was a six-time Pro Bowler. At the time Fouts set the NFL record for passing yards in three consecutive seasons from 1979-1981. Dan won an MVP award during his career and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1993.

Fouts currently works for CBS as a color analyst. The broadcasting bug runs in the family, as Dan’s father, Bob Fouts, is a Bay Area Radio Hall of Famer.
